October to April is the dry season in Laos, South East Asia, and usually considered the best time to visit. Temperatures usually hit highs of about 32 °C (90 °F)across the dry season in Vientiane, the country’s sleepy capital, though can spikes up to 35°C ( 95 °F)in April, the hottest month. The night of Naga Fireballs usually occurs on the last day of Buddhist Lent. People visit the Mekong River on this night to see burning orbs bursting out of the surface and rising into the sky in Pakngum Province. The cause of the phenomena is much contested but traditionally it is believed to be produced by the mythical river snake.

The end of Buddhist Lent is a two-day celebration. Offerings and donations are made to the monks at the temples and in the evening, candlelit floats are set adrift on the river to pay homage to the river. The following day, the people line the banks of the Mekong to watch the exciting boat races and celebrate the river gods.
