Kyrgyzstan in January

December to February is winter in Kyrgyzstan,and it gets very cold. Temperatures in Bishkek, the capital, in the country’s north fall anywhere between minus 10 and 10 °C (14-50 °F). As one might imagine, this is the best time of the year to try out the country’s spectacular skiing, with resorts tailored for the beginner to the expert. Generally intermediate to advanced skiers come to the mountain’s just outside Bishkek for the country’s famed backcountry skiing, unmarked virgin peaks that never seem to end. Perhaps one of the more unusual activities in winter in Kyrgyzstan is eagle hunting. Eagles are trained from a young age to hunt prey and return to their masters, a practice going back thousands of years in the Eurasian steppe. Though the birds are showcased throughout the year, it is in winter when the real hunting happens.
