October in Kazakhstan has its brief cool autumn with temperatures between minus 1 and 10 °C (30-50 °F) in Astana in the north, and between 4 and 17 °C (39-62 °F) in Almaty in the south, with little rain except for certain mountain reaches. White water rafting is popular at this time as the melting of the glaciers in summer leaves waters running high and fast, but there is plenty of easy-going kayaking for those that prefer something a little less intense. The lazier still can visit the beaches and spas of the Caspian coast. As with spring, the milder temperatures see cyclists come back out, cruising over canyons and camping by alpine lakes, making occasional stops in the cities for invigorating pick-me-ups of local beer, kebabs and other Kazakhstan delights.
