Hong Kong, the famed autonomous city on China's southernmost tip, has a humid subtropical climate. December through February is cool and dry, with highs averaging an almost constant 22 °C (72 °F) and lows of 15 (59 °F). The winter can be somewhat cloudy with occasional dry northerly winds swooping down from the Chinese mainland. At higher elevations there is even the occasional frost. Very much an international city, perhapsthe international city, it is divided into three distinct areas: Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories. Winter is an ideal time to visit as it is a season with minimal rain, averaging just 4 mm of rain per day over the season, with the vast majority of days completely dry. Despite its reputation as a high-octane metropolis with a vibrant nightlife, outside its urban center Hong Kong is full of rolling hills and secluded peaks, great for a gentle ramble or more serious hike, not to mention clean and desolate beaches.
