March through May in Hong Kong is warm and humid with occasional rain. High temperatures reach about 23 °C (73 °F) in March but by May they have hit 30 (86 °F). Though it is before the monsoon and nicely temperate, it does get progressively wetter toward the end of spring, a mere 16 mm rainfall a day in March becomes 78 mm by May. From May onward be sure to pack an umbrella. It is a fine season for climbing Victoria Peak, the highest point on Hong Kong Island (the lazier can take the tram), offering panoramic views of the vast city and a trail that takes in some of the region’s rich flora and lush vegetation. The Peak is home to vibrant butterflies and many bird species, such as the majestic Black kite.
