Bogawantalawa Valley

Located in Nuwara Eliya District in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands, the Bogawantalawa Valley remains largely as it has existed for centuries. It is a key access point for Horton Plains, one of the country's best parks. Visitors can hike and bike through verdant tea estates and stay in colonial bungalows once home to British overseers, but updated and restored for modern travelers.

Colonial Bungalow Stay

Stay in one of four classic colonial bungalows built for British tea estate managers in the days of the Raj. They offer guests the unique experience of life on a working tea estate in the highlands – the elevation here is over 4,000 feet.

Mountain Biking

Go mountain biking nearly 5,000 feet above sea level. Cycle off and on road tracks through the surrounding valleys, hills, tea plantations and villages with the independence to explore and stop off wherever you please.

Organic Gourmet Dinner

Enjoy a gourmet dinner served to you on the grounds of your bungalow, prepared by a private chef, featuring wine from an extensive cellar, fresh tropical fruit, and organic produce grown on the estate.

Private Plantation Lunch

Remote Lands will arrange for a private lunch a nearby tea plantation, where you will witness firsthand the leaf pickers at work, producing some of the world’s most renowned teas.

Walking and Hiking

Enjoy a gentle walk, or a more rigorous trek, around the varied landscape of Bogawantalawa valley, in the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea growing country. Walk through the sea of green tea plantations and admire the shimmering lake below and mountainous forests. Explore exotic flora, observe an array of birds and wildlife and absorb the majestic views some 4,000 feet above sea level. Take a pit-stop at one of the villages or a local British colonial bungalow for afternoon cream teas.

White Water Rafting

Enjoy the thrills of running over fast flowing river rapids, in contrast with the serenity of gliding through calm pools and past cascading waterfalls. Your white water rafting adventure will begin at Kitulgala an area of natural beauty, where you will mount the Kelani River. The clear Kelani’s waters originate from the slopes of sacred Adam’s Peak and stream their way through Sri Lanka’s Hill Country before pouring into the Indian Ocean. After safety instructions from your guide, you will continue to cruise seven high quality, class III warm water rapids and float through tranquil stretches of river that open up into pools ideal for swimming.
